Medical Cannabis Trends in Germany

December 5, 2019by developer0

Germany legalized medical cannabis in the year 2017. Since then, Germany has comfortably lived with the idea of medical marijuana. The number of medicinal marijuana users has increased over the past two years. As more Germans become educated about medical cannabis, more patients are starting to choose medical cannabis as an option.

Germany is poised to be a behemoth in the medical cannabis industry in Europe

The country has the facilities, resources, and workforce to build a strong cannabis industry in the coming years. After Germany legalized medical cannabis, it formed a singular entity that would take care of all transactions related to medical cannabis. This entity is called BfArM or the Bundesinstitut für Arzneimittel und Medizinprodukte/Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices. BfArM smoothened all the acquisition processes of CBD.

More and more Germans are able to get hold of medical cannabis. Presently, Germany allows the commercialization of medical cannabis in various forms, namely; oil, capsules, crystals, edibles, and cosmetics. The primary compound found among all these forms is CBD (cannabidiol).

CBD is a non-psychoactive compound of cannabis, meaning, it doesn’t make you high. THC, on the other hand, makes you high, and it is hard to acquire in German soil.

The healthcare situation in Germany

In the year 2018, 60,000 patients received medical intervention from cannabis. Mostly, these patients have a condition that can’t be treated properly by conventional ways. Within the same year, in Germany alone, there were 95,000 prescriptions made for medical cannabis. Germany reimbursed at least 60% of medical cannabis prescriptions to insurance companies. Because of this move, people could afford cannabis treatment easily.

The profitability of the medical cannabis industry

In 2018 alone, the cannabis industry in Germany was worth 73.7 million euros. The industry’s worth is expected to rise by the year 2024. By then, millions of patients are expected to receive medical cannabis treatment. And that movement still continues as CBD is made to be available in more pharmacies.

Germany, alongside the UK, is one of the top leaders in the cannabis industry today. The German cannabis regulation is getting smoother. With this, more investments are being made in the cannabis industry.

Final thought

Indeed, Germany has come to a time where CBD is freely but carefully made available for public consumption. The CBD’s positive effect on Germany’s health care system, as well as its economy, should serve as an example for other countries.

There are countries that still have conservative views about CBD. We hope that these countries become more open about medical cannabis.
